A Polestar 2 has been spotted at GM's Milford Proving Ground, suggesting that GM is using it as a benchmark vehicle for EVs.


GM Authority spy photographers recently captured The General benchmarking the all-electric Polestar 2 sedan in the vicinity of the Milford Proving Ground.

First breaking cover in February of 2019, the Polestar 2 made splashdown as the brand’s first fully electric, volume model. The four-door is characterized by horizontal styling elements for the front fascia, with LED lighting in front and T-shaped lighting signatures. A panoramic roof is seen up top, while the profile shows off large multi-spoke alloy wheels, crisp white body panels, and black trim pieces.

Providing the motivation is either one or two electric motors, depending on the model. The range-topping configuration is the Long range Dual motor trim, which produces 408 horsepower and 487 pound-feet of torque. The Polestar 2 is also offered in a Long range Single motor layout that produces 231 horsepower and 243 pound-feet of torque. The dual motor version is rated at 260 miles per charge, while the Long range Single motor is rated at 270 miles per charge.

As for equipment, three packages are available, including Pilot, Plus, and Performance. The optional Performance Pack is arguably the most interesting, adding in manually adjustable Ohlins Dual Flow Valve dampers, four-piston Brembo brakes, forged alloy wheels, and gold detailing. A range of tech is included with the Pilot pack, such as Pilot Assist, Cross Traffic Alert, and a 360-degree camera, while the Plus pack adds in a Harman Kardon sound system, the panoramic glass roof, and WeaveTech seats.

The Polestar 2 onboard infotainment system incorporates Google Android Automotive OS with Google built-in, while customers can select the available vegan interior and reconstructed wood options if desired.

I personally wish GM would stop "benchmarking" and just build something spectacular. This is why they've been losing market share, because they are just building "bare minimum" and not swinging for the fences. I guess when you care more about share holders than customers, this is how you run your business.

Drove a Dual Motor Performance spec Polestar 2 before our ordered Mach E 4X arrived. The Polestar handles well and has plenty of that EV instant shove (4.1 to 60, 12.7 1/4 mile). However, the interior packaging is tragic to put it nicely. If you want your tall sedan EV interior to mimic that of a 2-door sports coupe then you’ll probably like it. It’s clearly a modified ICE platform with the interior space concessions that entails.

Also, I believe the current Performance Plus pack option boosts the HP to 476ish.
