Ford CEO Jim Farley Says Ditching CarPlay Is A Bad Idea

Ford CEO Jim Farley was asked about whether Ford will ditch Apple CarPlay and Android Auto like GM and he said no and explained why he doesn't like the idea.

“I think the first three software shippable content that’s going to be cool for customers is not the interior digital experience. Although that will always be super important because it’s a safety critical device and then there’s going to be a lot more going on inside the car than your phone. So the interior has to be really well done. But in terms of content, we kind of lost that battle 10 years ago. So like get real with it because you’re not going to make a ton of money on content inside the vehicle. It’s going to be safety, security, partial autonomy and productivity in our eyes,” said Ford CEO Jim Farley.

Since the late 2000s, automakers have largely strived to integrate mobile devices and media players into their vehicle’s infotainment systems, a practice that is still ongoing. Ford has been at the vanguard of this practice, with the first generation Ford Sync system and with Sync 3, which offered standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto at a time when rivals hadn’t completely switched over to letting phones take over center touchscreens. However, not every automaker offers the technology, and as Ford Authority recently reported, its major cross-town rival is intent on ditching phone mirroring on its upcoming EVs in favor of a propriety system. The topic came up at the Wall Street Journal Future Of Everything Festival, where reporter Joanna Stern asked Ford CEO Jim Farley if his company was planning on following GM by ditching Apple CarPlay. He answered with an emphatic no and explained why such a decision is a bad move.

Essentially, Farley isn’t saying that services and subscriptions are a fool’s errand, because the company is currently betting that those things will be in demand and profitable for the automaker now and in the long run. Ford BlueCruise is a subscription service for those who want it, and Ford Pro is currently rolling out a plethora of options for fleet operators that will help them better monitor their vehicles. But he is saying that taking away this specific feature isn’t a good idea.

“But Tesla and other companies believe differently. They want complete control over the interior experience and we don’t think it’s differentiating. 70 percent of our Ford customers in the US are Apple customers. Why would I go to an Apple customer and say “good luck”? That doesn’t seem very customer centric and Apple does a really good job. So our philosophy is different. Our philosophy is we’re going to make the best Android/Carplay experience you can imagine. We’ll put on top of it a really good customization opportunity for the customers so they can kind of get what they want out of the interior experience. But let’s go ship great productivity, partial autonomy, safety and security software. That’s where the data off the car makes a difference and we can be different. It’s just a different bet,” he added.

Who wants a ford here is the question.
I always said the same about GM, the Blazer was going to change it but with the lack of informations,, no carplay/AA,not sure my mind will change.

I tried a F-150 Lighting and it's absolutely amazing
I can’t wait plus the mach e is too small for my needs.

They have very similar cargo space, +- 1 cu.ft.

I'm waiting for more details but will probably choose the Model Y now that we have a new model for 59k in Canada with 12k$ incentive here. It's the expected price of the Blazer EV 2LT, same incentive. Might get an ID.4 too it's bigger, have towing capacity and offer AndroidAuto/CarPlay

not worried about cargo. That backseat can’t fit three adults or two and a child easily. My ice blazer works perfectly.

Me :). I have 2022 Mach E GTPE.......and I'm definitely leaning toward keeping it...It is a BLAST to drive....and although I have two separate reservations in for the Blazer - the Blazer is going to have to knock me off my feet - or it's Ford for the win.

Don’t get me wrong it looks nice, I wish it was bigger for my family and had more options which the blazer will have equipped. Like simple ac seats. #floridaproblems

I'm third generation GM. I've never owned a Ford, but I will not purchase the Blazer EV SS without bluetooth Apple Carplay. When someone texts me an address, I don't want to pull over and rekey it into the car's inferior navigation system. I may end up buying the Mustang Mach-E GT instead, due to it having Apple Carplay.

I can live without CarPlay. Barely use it in my 19 Blazer. Also I rather not downsize to a mach e. That back seat area is rough

Understandable, but I would prefer not to have any "on board" navigation/entertainment/phone system and just use my phone. It has all my stuff in it. :).

BTW I'm currently driving an 2020 Blazer RS, it's one of the best cars I've ever owned. My neighbor has a Mach-E, which I have driven, and I have to say, "it's pretty nice". I would love to have a 557HP Blazer EV SS, but beyond being inconvenient, GM's decision is anti-consumer, and I hate to reward it.

The mach e is nice but not as big as the blazer. It also lacks in a lot of features like a sunroof or ac seats.
