Trying to decide at which point do I or someone else bring up the obvious point. We don't have speed limits to limit a vehicles ability to drive fast, it is to limit people driving faster than what is reasonably safe for the conditions including the safety regulations the vehicles have been designed for. One might make the argument that it people can just travel at the speed they feel safe at. The problem with this is you are not the only one driving on the road and its not just your safety you need to worry about but the other drivers as well. If we share the same roadway regardless of how fast I am travelling, my own safety is dependent on your driving ability in what many would view as unsafe conditions. We have speed limits because we know that the rate of crashes and fatalities are linked not directly to the speed on travels but exponentially. Simply put (for your sake) its not a straight line ratio of speed to crashes. Driving 100 kph might result in 100 accidents per year, 120 kph might mean 200 & 130 kph might mean 1000. Why should I or anyone else put the safety of themselves or those they care about in the hands of people who given the opportunity would drastically increase their chances of causing them harm. All it takes is one time where you or someone else misjudges the road, or the conditions drastically and the damage incurred would be much higher than going at the currently stated speeds. The current limits don't negate the fact this could still happen, but it minimizes the risk of it happening.
Long story short. You want to go fast, go to a track where the conditions are set up for you to do so without increased risk to others. Otherwise, suck it up Buttercup.

This just tells me that you are a sheep, willing to do what the masses want. I definitely disagree with you that my safety is in the hands of other people. Especially when driving at high speeds on the freeway compared to the possibility of having a crash on surface streets or at a stop light when speeds are a fraction. If what you say is true, (which it's not) that speed limits are put in place to protect other people then explain to me why a person can get arrested for driving 130 in the middle of nowhere with nobody around?
